Willie Williams Obituary

Willie James Williams, 86, of Hodges, SC entered into eternal rest on July 4, 2024, at Marth Franks Retirement Community in Laurens, SC. Willie was born in Newberry, SC, the son of John Williams and Ola Mae (Thomas). Willie graduated from Gallman High School in 1956, and attended Benedict College in Columbia, SC, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics. After graduating, he enlisted in the Army for two years. He also attended Clemson University where he received a Master's Degree in Administration. 

He taught Math at Northside Junior High, Ninety-Six High, and was assistant Principal at Greenwood High School until January of 1995 when he went to work at Greenwood School District 50 as the Assistant Superintendent for Administration. He also worked summers at GLEAMS, Snead Builders Supply Co., Wicks Lumber Co., and County Parks and Recreation for extra income.

He served as a commissioner for the Greenwood Metropolitan District, was a member of the Governor's Youth Council, the Piedmont Technical College Board of Visitors, and the Sexual Trauma Counseling Center.

In September of 1961, he married Mary Sue Arnold of Greenwood, SC, and had two daughters: Brenda W. Hunter (Deceased), and Deidre Williams of Hodges, SC. Wille was preceded in death by his mother and father; brothers, Clark and John David; and a sister Earline McMorris (Andrew/Deceased). His surviving siblings are Pauline (Corky/Deceased), Richard (Lillie), and Ralph.

His life will forever be remembered in the hearts of his: wife, Mary Williams; daughters, Brenda W. Hunter (Deceased) and Deidre Williams; grandchildren: Charlene Belcher of Abbeville, SC, Michael Carson of Atlanta, GA, Trenton Carson of Greenwood, SC, Karl Harrison, Jr. of Greenwood, SC, Kevon Harrison of the home; 17 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren. Also, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, July 8, 2024, in the Greenwood Memorial Gardens & Mausoleum Chapel. Mr. Williams will be placed in the chapel at 10:00 am. Public viewing will be held from 1:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Sunday, July 7, 2024, in the Percival-Tompkins Chapel. The family is at their respective homes.
