A LIFE OF 98 BLESSED YEARS OF Mrs. Louvinda “Grandma Lou” Edwards McGhee I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth, there is laid up for me a Crown of Righteousness. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 With profound love and heartfelt sorrow, the family of Mrs. Louvinda “Grandma Lou” Edwards McGhee, age 98, announces her peaceful transition from labor to reward on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at her residence, 103 Empire Circle, surrounded by her devoted family and loved ones. Mrs. Louvinda was born in Greenwood, SC, on July 29, 1927, to the late Mr. Ed and Mamie Devlin Edwards. She was educated in the public schools in Greenwood, South Carolina, and North Carolina during her childhood. She was the widow of the late Aaron McGhee.Mrs. Louvinda was the last survivor of her immediate family of three siblings at the age of 98. A woman of deep faith, Mrs. Louvinda accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Mt. Pisgah Methodist Church in Greenwood, where she worshipped alongside her mother. She later relocated but carried her unwavering faith with her throughout her life. Mrs. Louvinda dedicated many years as a devoted housekeeper for families in the Greenwood area, known for her diligence, kindness, and unwavering work ethic. She had a passion for writing and was known for sending heartfelt postcards to family and friends, a tradition she lovingly maintained until her health declined. Her zest for life was evident in her love for travel, with cherished trips to Las Vegas, Tennessee, Texas, and Branson, Missouri. A devoted fan of country and gospel music, she found joy in visiting the studios of her favorite artists, including Alan Jackson, George Jones, Lee Greenwood, and Reba McEntyre. One of her most treasured memories was attending a Charley Pride concert from the front row, accompanied by her beloved son, Tommy—a dream fulfilled. Mrs. Louvinda also found joy in classic television, especially Westerns like Gunsmoke, Little House on the Prairie, The Big Valley, and Bonanza. She was an avid viewer of Family Feud, where she delighted in watching her favorite host, Mr. Steve Harvey. Also, she spearheaded and encouraged the First Edwards Family Reunion of her 98 years desiring and praying the family to Celebrate the family’s legacy. Throughout her life, Mrs. Louvinda was recognized for her community involvement and exemplary character. She received numerous accolades from the Salvation Army, including Perfect Attendance and Good Citizenship Awards, and was crowned Golden Age Woman in her 90s.Woman in her 90s. On her 90th birthday, she was honored with a Resolution from Greenwood County. She was also the oldest resident of East Cambridge Apartments, where she lived for over 30 years before relocating. Mrs. Louvinda was the last surviving sibling of her family, preceded in death by her parents; her husband, a sister, Julia Gray; her brothers, Essie Edwards and Fred Edwards; grandsons Dexter L. Edwards and Joey Edwards; and a great granddaughter, Brooklyn Edwards. She leaves to cherish her memory: Two Daughters: Beverly Edwards Kinard and Jeanette McGhee (Monroe) Dunlap, both of Greenwood, S.C. Four Sons: Joe (Sandra) Edwards of Charlotte, NC; Ed Edwards and Joe Bolen, both of Greenwood, SC; and Tommy Edwards of Spartanburg, SC., Sister-in-law: Sally Edwards of Greenville, SC, Great granddaughter and co-caregiver: Zoey Herring, reared in the home. A host of (26) grandchildren, (55) great grandchildren, and (36) great-great grandchildren; Special nieces, Anna , Etta Williams, Doris Burton, Lynn Callahan, Linda Reid, and Rene Williams. A cousin: Ruth Wideman of Greenwood, SC and a Devoted friend of over 30 years: Charlene Glover. Numerous loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends who will forever cherish her memory. The family extends special thanks to Tonya Parks, beloved granddaughter and caregiver, and to Agape Hospice for their compassionate care and support. Mrs. Louvinda “Grandma Lou” Edwards McGhee’s life was a testament to faith, love, and resilience. Her legacy of kindness, strength, and unwavering devotion to family and community will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Celebration of Life services will be held 1:00 pm on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at the Prevailing Church with Apostle Kevin Simmon Presiding and Apostle Jessie Simmons officiating. Interment will follow in the Evening Star Cemetery.
Public viewing will be held from 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm on Monday, October 13, 2025, at Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home. The family is at the home.
