Larry Darnell Tompkins was born on January 10th, 1959, to the late Fannie Mae Harrison Tompkins and Joseph Tompkins, Sr., and grew up in Plum Branch, South Carolina.
Larry graduated from McCormick High School in 1977. After graduating high school, he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy from the University of South Carolina in 1983. He later attended Greenville Technical College where he earned a carpentry degree in 1986. Larry was also an active member in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1981 to 1987.
He married Melanie Brown in April of 1997 in Lake City, South Carolina. Together they welcomed two beautiful daughters, of whom he was very proud — Kiara in December 1997 and Briana in October 2000.
Larry accepted Christ at an early age and became a faithful member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Plum Branch, SC. He enjoyed working on carpentry projects and serving his church community as a Sunday school teacher.
Over the course of his 41-year pharmacy career, he found great joy in serving hundreds of customers all throughout upstate South Carolina with Rite Aid, Eckerd, Fred’s, and most recently as a pharmacist at the Greater Greenwood United Ministry’s Free Medical Clinic for the past 16 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and four sisters. He is survived by his wife, Melanie B. Tompkins of the home; and two loving daughters, Kiara Tompkins of Spartanburg, South Carolina and Briana Tompkins of Charlotte, North Carolina. He also leaves behind a host of in-laws, nieces and nephews, extended family and loving friends, who will cherish his memory and miss him dearly
Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 19, 2025 at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Butler officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Tompkins will lay in state from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at the church.
Public viewing will be from Noon until 5 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
