James Arthur Wilson, 91, of 3726 Cokesbury Road loving husband of Margaret Arnold entered peacefully into the Heavenly Gates on July 24, 2024 at his home. He was born in Newberry County April 16, 1933 a son of the late Sam Wilson and Mattie Suber. He was a retired Assistant Superintendent of Transportation with the Ninety-Six School District where he coached many sports at Edgewood and Ninety Six High. The Ninety Six High School football “Wilson-Campbell Stadium” was named in his honor. He was an Honorably Discharged Korean War Veteran of the United States Marine.
He was a graduate of Newberry High School, Benedict College and received his Master's from the University of Indiana.
He was a faithful member of Saint Paul AME Church, Cokesbury where he served in several ministries. He was current Steward Pro Tem, former Sunday School Teacher and Local Lay President. He was also a member of the SC Locksmith Association and Greenwood County Voter Registration and Elections for 30 years. He served also on the Greenwood School District #50 Board for many years.
He is preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Suber and a sister, Dorothy Ruff.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 67 years Margaret A. Wilson, a son, James Arthur Wilson II (Kendra); a daughter, Michelle Wilson Covington (Wayne) of Boiling Springs, SC; a brother, Samuel Frye of Virginia Beach, VA; a sister, Irene Floyd (Wendell) of Orangeburg, SC; 7 grandchildren, Brandon Ward (Fallon), Kimberly Wilson, James Wilson III, Shantella Marshall , Tyrell Calhoun (Quinetta), Brianna Calhoun and Coran Calhoun, 16 great grandchildren, and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services will be held Noon Monday, July 29, 2024 at St Paul AME Church, Cokesbury with Rev. Mary Elmore Thomas officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Evening Star Cemetery. Public viewing will be held from 1 - 6 pm on Sunday. Mr. Wilson will lay in state from 11:00 am until Noon on Monday, July 29, 2024 at St Paul AME Church, Cokesbury. The family is at the home. Percival Tompkins Funeral Home is honored to serve the Wilson family.
