Charles Grier Obituary

On April 18, 2023, Charles Marion Grier transitioned peacefully into eternal rest at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood S.C. after a brief illness. He was born on December 21, 1950 in Abbeville South Carolina to the late Murry Glover Grier and Marion P. Grier. From his early years, Charles was known as an avid conversationalist who fostered long lasting connections within his community, such as "Bubba" and "Fleet". This legacy would later extend beyond the confines of his birthplace. After graduating from Wright High School in Abbeville, Charles pursued a higher education from Anderson College Junior College. He, subsequently, was drafted into the U.S. Army in June 1970 where he served as a military policeman, as well as working in the field of military justice. He exited the Army in June 1971 with the rank of E-4 having formed an unbreakable circle of brothers from all walks of life that has stood the test of time.

Charles, subsequently, resumed his post-high school education at Erskine College, Due West S.C. He successfully earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Services in May 1979. After a career in social work, he secured employment at the U.S. Postal Service. He was faithfully employed for 30 years as a Rural Mail Carrier. He hung up his mailbag in September 2017 for a well-deserved life of travel and leisure. He was also a member of American Legion Post 20 and a steward of his beloved Rocky River A.M.E. Church in Iva, S.C.

It was his friendships that have been a central and consistent theme of his life. He nurtured them. He had an unselfish willingness to share his time, along with nuggets of knowledge and wisdom about almost anything. He welcomed everyone with warmth. His wit was a hallmark of his personality that had the ability to put everyone at ease. Charles especially loved and adored his family, to include his church family, and truly believed in the awesome power of God. We loved him and he loved us.

Charles is survived by his adoring wife Archie Mae Grier of Greenwood S, one son, Keithan McGowan of Columbia SC, one daughter, Marian Grier of Donalds SC, one stepson, Anthony W. Thompkins, one stepdaughter, Archie Y. Warren of Camp Springs MD, one god daughter, Tanya Weston of Columbia SC; one sister, Annelle G. Zimmerman, one sister-in-law, Cornelia Glover, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and close friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Ellis Glover and Robert C. Glover.
